Don’t you wish your beginner concert band could play the National Anthem at your end of year assemblies? Without help from older musicians? And sound good? Now they can!

It’s finally here – a concert band arrangement of Advance Australia Fair that is completely playable standalone for first-year musicians (about 6 months of playing experience). It sticks strictly to a 0.5 level, excluding the dotted crotchet/quaver rhythm. Since students already know the National Anthem by ear, this rhythm will be a breeze, making it an excellent introduction if they haven’t learnt it yet.

Some instruments have alternate ‘A’ or ‘B’ parts (flute, trumpet, tuba and bass guitar). The ‘B’ parts are standard grade 0.5 ranges, but the ‘A’ part allows slightly more advanced musicians to show off their ability. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ parts are printed back-to-back so students can pick which part to play – you can use either version, or mix and match! Flutes can even play the ‘C’ option of the oboe part if this is more comfortable. The glockenspiel can also be swapped for either flute or oboe parts.

All pitched instruments play ALL THE TIME, and EXACTLY the same rhythms, making this ‘super easy’ to learn quickly. It seriously works with just the easiest parts, some ‘A’ parts, whatever… it works!

Even though most band performances of Advance Australia Fair are to accompany the rest of the school singing, this arrangement works perfectly on its own.

The audio & score demo shows 4 ways of performing this arrangement:

• All parts – with vocals
• No ‘A’ parts – with vocals
• All parts – no vocals (just band)
• No ‘A’ parts – no vocals (just band)

Thanks to my kids Penny & Miles for recording the horn and trumpet parts and singing. All 1 take only…it’s that ‘super easy’ – warts and all…including misheard lyrics 🙂 [Due to the recent lyric change and copyright we’ve gone with the original ‘young’]
