Hosenbugler Music presents fifteen three-part carols, which are flexible in how they may be performed.
ALL pitched instruments can play the melody, which is Part 1. Parts 2 and 3 are complimentary parts, and can be performed with almost any combination of instruments. Rather than flute, clarinet and trumpet always playing the melody, saxophones and horn playing harmonies, and the lower brass and woodwinds stuck on the bassline, you can completely mix and match to almost any combination.
To keep parts within comfortable ranges, there is some ‘octave wrapping’ of melodies, and often parts 2 and 3 are relatively higher than part 1. This is a great learning experience for musicians who should understand that 1) the melody isn’t always the highest part and 2) they should always be able to hear the melody clearly.
The drum part is optional, includes 3 levels of accompaniment for each carol:
Part 1 is very easy – only bass and snare drums with crotchets as the smallest note value
Part 2 is Easy – bass and snare with quavers, and hi-hat in one carol
Part 3 is harder – bass, snare and hi-hat, mostly as a rock style accompaniment, with semiquavers in one carol.
These arrangements are intended for performance by small ensembles (three players is recommended, (plus optional drums) or soloists playing part 1 only.
Although it is not designed to perform with a whole concert band, feel free to experiment with
different combinations of instruments and see what works for you. If you perform with a larger number of musicians, it’s best to keep the lower instruments on the same part (which can be any part) to avoid a muddy sound with multiple harmonies too low.
Carols with an anacrusis have the appropriate number of beats at the end, allowing repeats for multiple verses.
These carols work very well for buskers, and more intimate settings such as ‘foyer music’. With three different performers there are six possible combinations of
players (1 2 3, 1 3 2, 2 1 3, 2 3 1, 3 1 2 and 3 2 1).
