Description
This arrangement of Pickin’ Locks is identical in form of the original concert band version, but for full Big Band instrumentation.
In a half-time rock shuffle feel, the ‘A’ theme outlines the Dorian mode, and the ‘B’ theme outlines ii-V progressions in many keys and follows the cycle of 5ths. Trombone and Alto Sax solos are written, but changes are provided and improvised solos are encouraged. A largely unison section before the D.S. has hints of spy/mystery/cool.
Although the ranges are very reasonable, there are some challenging rhythms in the jazz/shuffle style, and appropriate articulations ensure your band will develop their abilities in this genre. Feel free to have your additional percussion players improvise.
